ECR Austria, together with GS1 Austria, has released a comprehensive guideline to support companies in preparing for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which will apply from 30 December 2025.

The regulation requires that certain commodities, such as soy, beef, palm oil, wood, cocoa, coffee and rubber,  as well as many of their derivative products, can only be placed on the European market if they are proven to be deforestation-free. This means that companies across the supply chain must implement strict due diligence processes, including documentation, monitoring and verification of sourcing practices.

To help businesses navigate these complex requirements, the publication "Implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation" offers:

  • A clear explanation of the EUDR and its legal background
  • An overview of affected products, HS/CN codes and special cases
  • Practical guidance on due diligence obligations for companies of all sizes
  • Information on competent authorities and control processes in Austria
  • Recommendations for using certifications and quality labels to reduce risks
  • Implementation tools, examples and a standardized supplier questionnaire for the industry

The guideline was developed by an interdisciplinary working group involving experts from trade, industry, authorities and NGOs. It aims to provide practical, hands-on support to sustainability managers, compliance officers, supply chain and quality managers, as well as decision-makers in purchasing, IT, legal and management functions.

By translating complex regulatory requirements into clear process steps, the guideline strengthens industry-wide cooperation and provides a standardised framework for communication between companies, retailers, suppliers and regulators. It also reduces uncertainties and duplication of work, while promoting knowledge transfer and efficiency across the supply chain.

The full guideline is published in German and is available to download.
