Reducing Waste and Meeting Consumer Expectations: The Rise of Dilutable Products
As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainable innovation, ECR Community highlights a new publication from our national member, Institut du Commerce. Their latest article, produced in partnership with No Plastic in My Sea, explores the growing trend of dilutable products in the food, hygiene and cleaning sectors.
This study examines how concentrated, dilutable solutions are helping to reduce plastic packaging waste, lower carbon emissions through more efficient transport and storage and meet evolving consumer expectations for environmentally responsible products. The article presents real-world examples, such as Teisseire syrups, Qwetch solid drinks and MIR refills for cleaning products, that demonstrate significant reductions in plastic use (up to 82%), lower transport emissions and cost savings for consumers and businesses.
The report also features a detailed consumer survey conducted in France, revealing that 53% of respondents already purchase dilutable products. Among these buyers, 81% find these products practical and time-saving and the majority perceive their quality as equal to or better than traditional alternatives. Notably, 77% of consumers believe this trend is growing, and 80% want to see more innovation in this area.
However, a lack of knowledge and understanding remains a barrier for non-buyers, highlighting the need for greater awareness and education around the benefits and uses of dilutable products. The study concludes that expanding the offering, especially in the hygiene and cleaning categories and informing consumers about the environmental and economic advantages, are key to accelerating adoption.
