A Practical Approach for Retailers, Manufacturers, and Consumers
GS1 Italy and ECR Italia launched the Sustainability Management in Product Categories project to help companies reduce their environmental impact in a structured way. By analyzing 29 product categories, the project identifies areas where sustainability efforts can make the biggest difference. Using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the study examines the environmental footprint of products from raw materials to disposal, providing businesses with clear, science-based insights to improve their processes.
Key Findings and Industry Actions
- Where Change Matters Most
The research highlights the biggest environmental challenges in product categories, including sourcing materials, packaging, production, and logistics. For many products, raw material extraction and packaging design have the greatest impact, making these areas a priority for change. - Companies Leading the Way
Businesses across different sectors have already taken action. Barilla has reworked its supply chain to use more responsibly sourced ingredients. Parmalat has introduced recycled materials in its packaging to lower its carbon footprint. Red Bull has improved its aluminum can recycling, creating a closed-loop system that reduces waste. Coop has invested in energy-efficient store management, lowering emissions from its operations. These examples show how practical steps can make a real difference. - The Role of Retailers and Consumers
Retailers play an important part in reducing environmental impact by working closely with suppliers, adjusting product assortments, and providing better information to shoppers. Consumers, in turn, are becoming more aware of sustainability, choosing brands that align with their values. Companies that communicate clearly and back up claims with real data will earn stronger customer trust.
Why This Matters
This initiative offers businesses a practical framework to improve sustainability without disrupting operations. It encourages industry-wide collaboration, helping companies move beyond individual efforts and create a system where manufacturers, retailers, and consumers work together for a more sustainable future.
