GS1 Finland Introduces Structured Framework for Sustainable Data Management in the Food Chain

GS1 Finland, through the Food Data Finland growth engine program, has launched a practical solution to help companies in the food chain comply with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This initiative not only supports immediate compliance needs but also prepares businesses for long-term sustainability and operational efficiency in response to changing regulations.

The Deforestation Regulation, aimed at reducing global deforestation impacts, requires companies to submit detailed documentation, including batch-specific due diligence statements (DD statements), via the TRACES system. This creates significant demands for data collection, sharing, and management throughout supply chains.

GS1 Finland's proposal focuses on unifying and automating information flows, utilizing global GS1 standards to improve efficiency and accuracy. Key recommendations include:

  • Automating DD Statements: Through API integrations with the TRACES system.
  • Streamlining Data Transmission: Using electronic delivery messages and machine-readable pallet labels.
  • Standardized Event Data: Implementing the EPCIS standard to support supply chain communication.
  • Future-Ready Framework: A flexible approach to manage upcoming legislative requirements while optimizing processes.

A Phased Implementation Plan:
To ensure smooth adoption, the roadmap divides the process into three stages:

  1. Initial Measures: Actions to meet immediate EUDR data requirements.
  2. Unified Data Transfer: Automation and standardization of information exchange between stakeholders.
  3. Scalable Approach: A long-term solution incorporating the GS1 Traceability standard to meet future legal and operational needs.

GS1 Finland collaborating with food chain operators, SMEs, authorities and industry associations to ensure the proposal is inclusive and practical for businesses of all sizes. This cooperative effort ensures that these standards are accessible and actionable, enabling companies to comply efficiently and effectively.
