Guideline for Measuring Circularity Circol-Up Tool by GS1 Italy

This publication by GS1 Italy, developed in collaboration with the Institute of Management at Scuola Sant'Anna and Ergo, provides companies with a practical tool to assess and improve their performance in the circular economy. At the heart of the document is Circol-UP, a measurement methodology created by GS1 Italy for the food & beverage, home & personal care and retail sectors. Circol-UP enables businesses to analyse their processes across the entire value chain, identify strengths and areas for improvement and define targeted strategies to enhance their level of circularity and sustainability.

The guideline also offers a comparison between Circol-UP indicators and leading international and national standards: the ISO 59000 family, the UNI 11820 technical standard and the European ESRS E5 standard linked to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). This helps companies navigate the available measurement frameworks, understand the synergies between Circol-UP and official standards and implement structured approaches for reporting and continuous improvement. The document therefore serves as both a strategic and operational support for organisations wishing to embed circular economy principles more effectively into their business models.
